Cranford High School 2009 Newsweek rating for the Top 1500 public high schools in the country is 568! See link and compare to neighboring schools. Here's the link.

Over 170 schools and districts from around the United States as well as from Canada, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Mexico will receive 200 awards for "Promising Practices" in character education. Cranford High School will receive an award for its University Program. The program was developed and initiated by Supervisor of Academic Affairs, John Arlotta and Language Arts Supervisor, Barbara Carroll four years ago.

For the annual Congressional Arts Competition, CHS Art teachers Ms. Knego, Ms. Barkin, and Ms. Cortinas entered the artwork of their students; Gina De Cagna, Sarah Armstrong, Rita Uhle, Aliva De Mars, Devon Conway, Anna Autilio, and Gerard Martell. Rita Uhle was presented with the "Viewers Choice" award at the exhibit reception held at Schering-Plough on Saturday May 16, 2009.

Congratulations to Ms. Fisco and her students for donating supplies to the 340th military police company and Operation Gaining Trust and the 3rd Platoon War Pigs in Iraq. These efforts allowed for the platoon to donate supplies to more than 2500 iraqi children with much needed sports equipment and school supplies.

Confratulations to Senior Morgan McDonough for her poster on Trees are Terrific. She won first prize $100 from the Cranford Tree Advisory Board.

Congratulations to Christi Capazzo for advancing to the national finals for her safety poster for AAA.

Congratulations to Vince Dooley,Hanna Jenkins,Kelly Rey , Eddie Garbowski, Julianne Grandl, and Devon Garges for outstanding effort in the Creation of a Public service announcment in the 2009 Prom and alcohol don't mix challenge. They all received Honorable Mention awards.

The artwork of the following Cranford High School students of teachers Ms. Julie Barkin and Ms. Joanne Knego were selected for the 2009 HIGH RELIEF - NJ HS Sculpture Competition at The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts (SICA): Alanna Augustine, Lauren Bonczek, Melissa Faitoute, Claire Humen, Kayla Keller, Gerard Martell, Vasyl Nayda, Stephanie Newton, Emerson Pavezzi, Beth Ramey, Michael Rosei, Danielle Siani, and Christie Valentine. Their works were juried for inclusion in the show from a vast array of entries by students through out the state. The exhibit opening and reception was on May 9, during which CHS student Gerard Martell was awarded first place in show. His work entitled, Isocronism is a mobile made out of sheet copper using the repousse process and wire spheres. Gerard was in attendance at the reception to receive a $200 gift certificate to any art class that is offered at the institute, a pass which allows free admissions to a variety of museums throughout the US, and a free membership to the institute. His mobile was also included in the "SICA" Big Art Show on May 16, 2009.

On Sunday, May 3, 2009 three Cranford High School Varsity Cheerleaders: Helen Alto, Jeneva Fiamingo, & Emily Weisgerber were formally introduced at members of the NJ All Star Classic Cheerleading Team at a press conference at Rutgers University. They are joining 27 of the top cheerleaders from across the state of New Jersey, to cheer on our team at the 12th Annual game (Formerly the Governor's Bowl).

This year's game will take place on Sunday, June 7th and will be broadcast live on My9 at 3pm then run on the ESPN network the following week. Tickets for the game can be purchased through the official game Website!

At this past weekend's Legislative Conference, the Cranford Delegation received an Outstanding Delegation award.

The following students authored their own bills and had them signed into action by the youth governor: Billy Daly, Michael Klimek, and Andrew O'Neill.

The following students successfully co-sponsored a bill, and passed it through their assigned chamber (Senate or Assembly): Mike Cohen, Kyle Dubin, Vincent Ivos, and Jacqueline LaBrutto.

Andrew O'Neill, Billy Daly, and Michael Klimek received awards for Outstanding Bill.

Amy Negrin and Eli Howard were selected for a conference-wide planning meeting.

Carrie Bilenker was appointed the NJ Commissioner of Labor and Workforce Development.

The following students were selected to attend the Committee on National Affairs: Andrea Von Ellen, Jill Feeney, and Carrie Bilenker.

Alternates selected for the same committee were: Jeremy Rodriguez, Mike Cohen , Billy Daly, and Frannie Kenajian.

This week a CHS junior, Kate McCann, Maddie Johnstone and Danielle McAuliffe, has been selected as a finalist for the 14th annual Wallenberg Honors Program. She will be honored on May 13, 2009. For more information about the program, see Here

CHS juniors, Sam White,Nathan Verrilli, Mike Cohen and Anthony Deczynki have been selected to attend Boys State during the week of June 21st.

John Garretson has been selected as an alternate.

Boys State offers training in the processes of self government and good citizenship as practiced in a democratic society.

Boys State selections must be sponsored by an American Legion chapter. Fortunately, the Clark chapter is sponsoring three of our students and the Bayonne chapter is sponsoring Anthony..

The Fareligh Dickinson business idea competition awards happened last week, and Cranford has cleaned house there. Winning not only 6 of the 8 semifinalist spots...not only 2 out of 4 finalists spots...but one person who won the entire central region competition! Results below:

A "Well done!" for Anthony Deczynski, a junior, who recieved second place award for zoology at the North Jersey Regional Science Fair at Rutgers.

Congratulations again to the 10 CHS students(mentioned earlier), who traveled to Oklahoma City last week to take part in the National Honor Choirs at the national convention of the American Choral Directors' Association. The 10 were met with thunderous applause and incredible reviews through the two concerts with from across the entire U.S. Nice work Choir musicians!

Sixteen Cranford High School students attended the DECA State Leadership Conference held in Cherry Hill, NJ on February 25 through the 27th. We are very proud to announce that our DECA has one first place winner in the category of accounting, and four state finalists. Each business category had 50 contestants from all over New Jersey.

This week, 10 Cranford students were accepted into the American Choral Directors' Association's National Honor Choirs! These 10 were selected from over 1100 student entries from all fifty states to be part of the top high school choir in the United States! The students will be traveling to Oklahoma City for the ACDA National Convention and Honor Choir performance.

Yesterday the DECA club competed in their annual regional competition, with an astounding 17 members advancing to the state tournament in Cherry Hill on February 25, 26, & 27. The qualifiers are:

Individual sections include Bridget Wolansky, who received second place overall in Accounting Application, Ryan Cathcart, who won first place in the Food Marketing series, and Jill Feeney, who won second place overall in Business Services Marketing. Congratulations to all who participated and good luck in the state competitions!

Congratulations to the 62 members of the CHS Model United Nations Delegation for earning the award of "Outstanding Delegation" at the U.N. Annual Regional Conference at Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Other awards received include: Delegate Carrie Bilenker won the "Premier Delegate" of the legal committee and was elected chair of that committee for '09-'10.

Matt Backiel was awarded "Best Year Delegate" in the 200-student general assembly.

CHS delegate John Garretson was elected vice chair of next years African Union Committee.

John Garretson, Tom Marra, Steve Krenick, & Frannie Kenajian were elected into the Youth Secretariat, the planning group for model U.N. Conferences.

Shamsheer Cheema was elected to represent CHS at the National conference in North Carolina this summer, with Kyle Dubin & Carrie Bilenker as alternatives.

Congratulations to Anna Autilio, Anthony Deczynski, Emily Starace and Stephanie Welch for having their research papers recognized by Rider University for the aquatic ecology project at The Hamilton-Trenton Marsh.

Congratulations to senior Alyssa Kempinski, who auditioned and was selected by Algonquin Arts as one of their twelve New Jersey high school Rising Stars in classical music. She will sing in an honor recital on November 19th.

In the second week of November, ten Cranford High School students who auditioned and were accepted to perform in the American Choral Association's All-National Honor Choir. They will represent Cranford in a national performance in Oklahoma City. These students are:

Congratulations to the Cranford Volley Ball Team, The Crush, for not only winning the State Championships in New Jersey, but also becoming the first Union County public school to win! They defeated Demarest 30-28, 25-21 in the group 2 finals. October 27, 2008, the Philadelphia Phillies became the 2008 World Champions of Baseball. This marks their second world series championship.

On October 24, Cranford High school along with twenty other schools took part in the Institute for the Humanities annual Classics Day conference and competition at Montclair State University.

The Cranford High School team had a total score of 65 points and placed 6th in the competition. Good Job!
